Tips On Choosing and Using Orthodontic Rubber Chains

news | 2023-12-18

Orthodontic elastic chains are a commonly used orthodontic accessory, utilized in clinical practice for traction, correcting rotations, closing extraction spaces, and closing scattered gaps. They are simple to use and hence widely applied in clinical settings. So, how should we choose and use orthodontic elastic chains in daily practice? Today, we'll discuss these two aspects.

A. Choosing Orthodontic Elastic Chains

1.Opt for softer orthodontic elastic chains that rebound well and resist deformation. These types of chains maintain gentle, corrective force on the teeth over time.

2.Based on clinical needs, choose from long (LONG), medium (MEDIUM), or short (SHORT) distances. Short (2.8mm) and medium (3.5mm) are most commonly used. The shorter the distance between the holes, the greater the force. Note that stretching should not exceed five times the original length.

B. Placement Techniques for Orthodontic Elastic Chains

1.Whether to Use Instruments Depending on personal preference, use either hands or a needle holder to place the chain on the orthodontic appliance or implant screw. For hard-to-reach or tie areas, a needle holder is beneficial.

2.Combining with Ligature Ties Use orthodontic elastic chains with ligature ties (tieback) to close gaps by tying the ligature on a traction hook, or use a segment of the chain directly.

3.Gentle Force Apply gentle force to avoid discomfort to the patient. If the chain feels too tight, try one with a larger hole distance or pre-stretch the chain.

4.Avoid Pressing Soft Tissues or Instability Ensure the chain doesn't press on soft tissues and is stable without slipping.
